Big Hat Energy

By: ISABELLA CANEL

Malibu-based Teressa Foglia is a modern milliner with a serious case of wanderlust. An avid topper lover, she took a hat-making course while visiting Europe, which led to a career pivot that resulted in Teressa Foglia Hat Studio + Shops — located in Brooklyn, Malibu, Laguna Beach, Nashville, and Houston — and soon adding Miami’s Faena Hotel as a retail partner. Her custom, one-of-a-kind creations are as unique as the wearer. Though trims like vintage grosgrain, antique fabrics, charms, and jewelry are often sourced at antique markets in Paris, Sardinia, Ibiza, Tokyo, and Bali, Malibu is a continuous source of Foglia’s inspiration.

CONNECTION
Driving PCH from Malibu north to County Line. One of my favorite ways to connect to LA’s vibrant energy is through watching shows at the Hollywood Bowl.

PEOPLE WATCHING

I love spending the afternoons and sunsets at the Little Beach House Malibu or at Nobu where the best people watching is done with a “Picante” cocktail in your hand, of course.

TROPHY PLACING

While you can shop in our own boutique in Malibu, it would be great to see our hats in a store I really admire. Just One Eye comes to mind.

INSPIRATION

CANVAS, a locally owned boutique and gallery in Malibu always has new exhibits and the best fashion. Also, I find inspiration at The Getty, hiking Solstice Canyon, or walking Broad Beach. I try to make it to the monthly Rose Bowl Flea Market as much as possible. For a designer, it’s a very inspiring destination.

CHILL

Since I live and run our store in Malibu, I spend most of our time in the small beach town. When the weather heats up, I love to go sailing along the coast, stop by Broad Street Oyster or Malibu Seafood for lunch, enjoy afternoons at the local wineries, take the paddleboards out, and enjoy cocktails at The Surfrider Hotel.
